Saving Money On Your Electric Bill With Landscape and Home Improvements
Whether or not you believe in investing in modern “green” technologies, environmental conservation, global warming, or any related issues, there is one thing I am sure you would not mind, and that is trimming your electric bill every month. Luckily for you, this can be extremely simplistic. If you want to go all out and convert to solar power, please do. This is a big investment, but will pay for itself in a rather short period of time. With solar power, your electric meter actually goes backwards! That is right, you send usable energy back into your local grid. You also receive credits you can sell at a premium. That is not what this article is about, but I just had to throw it in there.
I think you would agree that landscaping can beautify any house. But did you know it could help your home become more energy efficient? How nice is it to relax under a tree and read a book and just relax? It is nice, at least for those of us who enjoy reading and staying cool. Your home may not read, but it will love the shade. Planting a tree in a strategic spot around your home can provide shade and drastically reduce your cooling costs. Plant trees on the side(s) of your house that get the most sun and watch your electric bill drop, while you beautify your home. If you use a window unit air conditioner, place them in one of the windows that get that lovely shade, the unit will work less hard, and therefore, use less power. Also, make sure you use the right size window unit, you do not need a gigantic window unit to cool an 10×10 bedroom. When it comes to the rest of your windows, make sure they are properly sized and sealed to prevent drafts. If you can afford to replace those old single pane windows to energy efficient double panes, go ahead and do it.
Safety wise, make sure to keep bushes and shrubbery away from your heating and cooling units to prevent restricted airflow. Along those same lines, please check your filters, this will not only guarantee cleaner, safer air but also make the lifespan of your unit longer. Getting your equipment checked at least once a year is a very worthwhile investment, according to Murphy’s law, your units will break on that 100 degree, or -20 degree day. You have heard the whole shpiel on what turning down your thermostat just a degree or 2 can do. So I will not go there, as long as you just do it.
