Also, make sure you use the right size window unit, you do not need a gigantic window unit to cool an 10×10 bedroom. When it comes to the rest of your windows, make sure they are properly sized and sealed to prevent drafts. If you can afford to replace those old single pane windows to energy efficient double panes, go ahead and do it.
Safety wise, make sure to keep bushes and shrubbery away from your heating and cooling units to prevent restricted airflow. Along those same lines, please check your filters, this will not only guarantee cleaner, safer air but also make the lifespan of your unit longer. Getting your equipment checked at least once a year is a very worthwhile investment, according to Murphy’s law, your units will break on that 100 degree, or -20 degree day. You have heard the whole shpiel on what turning down your thermostat just a degree or 2 can do. So I will not go there, as long as you just do it.
